The International Agreement for Preventing Collisions Sea 1972 (COLREG 72) aims to update and replace the Collision Regulations of 1960 which were adopted at the same time as the 1960 SOLAS Convention.
Sound and light signals are part of the COLREDs g 38 rules, which divided into five sections. Technical requirements for lights and shapes, sound appliances, additional signals for fishing vessels when operating, and international distress signals are contained in four annexes.
Vessel Navigation Lights
The Marine Safety Act requires that lights must be displayed from sunset to sunrise and in times of restricted visibility during daylight hours. The minimum ranges at which lights can be seen are determined by the conditions of a dark night with a clear atmosphere.
