Introduction to SocMon for Coastal and Small-scale Fisheries Management in Southeast Asia

SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) organized a workshop on “Introduction to Socioeconomic Monitoring (SocMon) for Coastal and Small-scale Fisheries Management in Southeast Asia” in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, from 5 to 7 November 2024. The workshop was held in collaboration with Fisheries Administration (FiA), Cambodia and supported by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s International Technical Assistance Program (DOI-ITAP). The Workshop aimed to introduce the SocMon guidelines and enhance the knowledge of fisheries officers in applying socioeconomic data collection and monitoring techniques to better manage coastal and small-scale fisheries. There were 17 participants (4 female and 13 male), divided into Fifteen participants from FiA learned the SocMon methodology in sessions led by two SEAFDEC/TD staff. At the end, the Workshop strengthened their capacity in socioeconomic data collection and analysis, directly benefiting local fishing communities for sustainable fisheries management. As part of its mission, SEAFDEC/TD plans to continue supporting similar initiatives, expanding the SocMon training program to other member countries and strengthening socioeconomic monitoring networks throughout Southeast Asia.
