SEAFDEC/TD Organize the UNCLOS Training for AMSs

SEAFDEC Training Department (SEAFDEC/TD) organized the “Regional Training Course on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS 1982) in Fisheries Perspective” from 6 to 9 November 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand. Fifty-one (51) participants from AMSs attended this training. The training invited Ms.Charlotte Salpin, Mr.Michele Ameri, Ms.Rachel Lucas from Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS),United Nations, Ms.Minmin Lei from FAO/Rome, Ms. Angela Lentisco from FAO/RAP, Mr.Ichiro Nomura, Special Advisor to the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries for International Affairs (Fisheries) of the Japanese Government, and Mr.Ganesan Vethiah, Vetted MCS Expert/ Fisheries Law and Enforcement Expert, Malaysia as resource persons. The training subjects focused on 1) UNCLOS and UN Fish Stock, 2) Enforcement of International and Domestic Fisheries Laws: Case Studies, 3) Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement, 4) International Instruments of the Implementation of the Provision of the UNCLOS Relating to Fisheries Perspective through Prevent Deter and Eliminate IUU Fishing, and 5) Implement of FAO and fishery bodies in UNCLOS and other agreement. The outputs of training are expected on 1) enhancing the capacity and knowledge of fisheries officers from ASEAN Member States (AMSs) in relation to UNCLOS 1982 and its implications for fisheries, and 2) sharing information on the National Plan of Action to Prevent, Deter, and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing (NPOA-IUU) and international agreements related to IUU fishing.
