PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS
Southeast Asia’s fisheries are increasingly being challenged to enhance catch documentation and traceability (CDT) protocols, more sustainably manage their fisheries resources and address serious human welfare concerns to ensure that their fisheries are able to continue to be prosperous. Its fisheries operate in a multifaceted landscape with transboundary resources, varying regulations and complex supply chains. These complex challenges require the participation of regional, national and local governments, together with private industry and organizations. Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) leverage the expertise, resources and interests of government and privately operated industries or organizations to achieve mutually beneficial objectives. Some of the benefits of public-private partnerships include increased mobilization of resources; distribution of risks and benefits; increased scalability; increased trust, support and buy-in amongst stakeholders; decreased operational “silos”; and greater sustainability and support.
WHAT IS USAID OCEANS’ APPROACH?
To improve transparency in the seafood supply chain and to help ensure successful system implementation, USAID Oceans engages a variety of stakeholders to develop partnerships between national and local governments, intergovernmental organizations, fisheries associations, seafood and technology companies, fisher groups, non-governmental organizations and others.
USAID Oceans aims to form partnerships that support the design and implementation of learning site catch documentation and traceability systems, enhance fishery sustainability and address the sector’s human welfare injustices. To achieve these goals, USAID Oceans’ PPPs support:
- Industry support and participation;
- Long-term sustainability of investments into deployment and expansion of traceability initiatives;
- Deployment of cutting-edge technology; and
- Capacity building.
WHAT HAS USAID OCEANS ACHIEVED?
