TRACETALES: FULLY INTEGRATED PRODUCTION, INVENTORY SYSTEM FOR SEAFOOD PROCESSORS.
For: Large- and Medium-Scale Fisheries
User: Processor
Supply Chain Node: Processor
Current Pilot Sites: Bitung, Indonesia
TraceTales, developed by USAID Oceans’ grantee Yayasan Masyarakat dan Perikanan Indonesia (MDPI) , enables processing companies to capture data throughout the processing stage. With the system, processors can quickly and easily compile the information required by various national and international traceability requirements, thereby ensuring the company’s access to valuable export markets, as well as bring paper-based record keeping online for improved business and resource management.
USAID Oceans First Mover, Blue Ocean Grace International (BOGI) pilots the digital TraceTales system, developed by MDPI, in the program learning site of Bitung, Indonesia.
How it Works:
TraceTales’ system can be accessed simultaneously by multiple workstations throughout the processing floor and management offices, allowing data entry from receiving, cutting, trimming, packing, loading and shipping. Using touchscreen monitor devices, users can enter data quickly and accurately in time with the processing activity. Digital scales connected directly to the system feed the direct values to the system, avoiding input errors. The system provides print labels for each packaged box, consisting of product information that can be used to trace the product through processing. TraceTales is configured on a local network, with data stored in a centralized database server.
TraceTales not only enables data capture and entry, but analysis as well. From the data entered throughout the processing stages, the system creates summary data reports, including graphical data analysis to support efficient decision making. TraceTales also allows users to export data to Excel for further analysis. With the system, data entry errors are reduced, the need for paper-based filing is eliminated, and improvements are made in traceability, inventory management, real-time data analysis, and electronic data sharing.
Capabilities:
- Data entry and management, from receiving through shipping to customer
- Enhanced business analysis and decision making, particularly for by-product management and inventory management
- Graphic-based data analysis to assist in decision making
- Elimination of paper-based data collection, enabling continuous data collection and recording
- Product labeling with QR codes capturing detailed information product origin and processing quickly and accurately in time with the processing activity
- Digital scales connected directly to the system feed the direct values to the system, avoiding input errors. The system provides print labels for each packaged box, consisting of product information that can be used to trace the product through processing.
Since February 2017, BOGI has been using the TraceTales system to convert its previous manual, paper-based recording system to a completely digital, fully integrated system.
